USA Swimming Club Excellence Program
The Sharks are now officially a Silver Medal Club, ranking 42nd in the country. There are only six other teams in Pacific Swimming that have silver or gold medal status. This information is on the front page of the USA Swimming Website. Over $340,000 in grant money is available to gold and silver medal clubs.
Sharks...Awesome in Austin
27 Sharks swimmers traveled to Austin, TX on March 4th - 6th to compete in the Austin
Grand Prix. Swimmers competed short course yards in the prelims and long course
meters in the finals. The event featured a plethora of Olympians and national team
members from the US and beyond. The venue at University of Texas has be described
by Rowdy Gaines as “The Fenway Park of swimming”. The team was anything but
intimidated by this high pressure environment. They rose to the occasion and swam to
some great results. We are very proud!
Madison White and Taylor Nanfria seemed to be in the pool constantly battling with this
world class field of athletes. Madison placed 3rd in the 200 back, 9th in the 100 back,
1st in the 1000 yard free prelim (personal best), 8th in the 400 free (personal best), and
18th in the 200 free. Madison also pitched in on the relays with a blazing :30.5 in the
50m backstroke. Taylor Nanfria placed 17th in the 400 free, 23rd in the 200 IM, 7th in
the 400 IM, 37th in the 200 free, and 11th in the 200 breast. These ladies really turned
heads on the pool deck with their durability and versatility.
Other Sharks who placed in the finals included Sidney Cooke, Jaimie Cook, Taylor
Munk, Delise Batiza, and Brittany Usinger. Sidney flashed some serious power in the
100m back in her 1st ever long course race with a 1:07.7. Brittanyʼs 200 fly scared the
11-12 girls Pacific Record in both yards and then again in meters. Delise was very
mentally tough on the final night of the meet competing in the 800m free, 200m back,
and finally in the 200m fly. In her third event of the marathon night (200 fly), she
charged from behind to take 2nd in the E final!
Other Sharks highlights include young swimmers who stepped up in the intense
environment to show serious promise for the future. Dillon Williams achieved his firstever
sectionals cuts in the 50 free and 100 free. Natalie Amberg got personal best times
in everything she swam. Dani Orlandi joined the sectionals team in the 100 fly and 100
back. Cody Tanabe ripped a :54.5 in the 100 fly. Quentin Cooper dipped under 17:00.00
in the mile for the first time. Amaya Batiza showed some serious backstroke ability
posting a 2:16. in the 200 back. It is very exciting to have such a great freshman and
under team at this meet. What an experience!
We are very proud of all the Sharks who competed. It was a great meet, especially
given that we were unshaved and still working toward JOʼs, Far Westerns, and NCS! Be
excited and encouraged for what lies ahead.
Go Sharks!!!
